Is sedation dentistry safe?
Yes. Sedation dentistry is safe for most healthy adults and children when administered by a trained dental team. At A2 Dental in Auburn, WA, we use sedation options ranging from nitrous oxide (laughing gas) to oral sedation, carefully matched to your health history, anxiety level, and the procedure involved. Every sedation visit includes monitoring throughout to keep you comfortable and protected.
Why so many Auburn patients avoid the dentist
Dental anxiety affects an estimated 36% of the population — and for many people, that anxiety is enough to delay or avoid care altogether. Over time, avoidance leads to bigger problems: cavities that become infections, gum disease that becomes bone loss, and small issues that turn into costly emergencies.
If any of these sound familiar, sedation dentistry may be right for you:
- You feel panicked or overwhelmed at the thought of a dental appointment
- You’ve cancelled appointments at the last minute because of fear
- You have a strong gag reflex or sensitive teeth
- You’ve had a painful or traumatic dental experience in the past
- You need a longer procedure and want to get it done comfortably in one visit
What sedation options does A2 Dental offer?
We offer two primary sedation options, both safe and widely used in dental practices across the country.
Nitrous oxide (laughing gas)
Nitrous oxide is inhaled through a small mask that rests gently over your nose. It takes effect within minutes, producing a calm, relaxed feeling without putting you to sleep. You remain fully conscious and able to respond to your dentist. When the mask is removed, the effects wear off quickly — most patients can drive themselves home afterward.
Oral sedation
For patients with moderate-to-severe anxiety, oral sedation involves taking a prescribed medication before your appointment. You’ll feel deeply relaxed — possibly drowsy — but remain conscious throughout. You’ll need someone to drive you to and from the appointment, and the relaxed feeling can linger for a few hours after.
Is sedation dentistry safe for everyone?
Sedation dentistry is appropriate for most patients, but a full health review is always completed before any sedation is used. Your A2 Dental care team will go over your medical history, current medications, and any health conditions to confirm the right option for you.
Nitrous oxide is generally safe for children and adults alike. Oral sedation is typically recommended for adults only and requires additional screening for patients with certain conditions, including respiratory issues, pregnancy, or specific medication interactions.
Your safety is the priority at every step. We’ll never recommend a sedation option that isn’t right for you.
What procedures can be done with sedation?
At A2 Dental, sedation is available for a wide range of treatments, including:
- Routine cleanings and exams for anxious patients
- Fillings, crowns, and restorative work
- Extractions and oral surgery
- Multiple procedures combined into a single, efficient visit
Combining procedures under sedation is a great option for patients who want to minimize the number of visits while still getting comprehensive care.
